Family Constellations: a practical guide to uncovering the origins of family conflict by Joy Manne (North Atlantic, £12.50) [FOUR STARS] Joy Manne presents a compact guide to a therapeutic technique devised by German born Bert Hellinger. Family constellations work on the theory that events in family history such as deaths, betrayals and wars impact on future and current generations. He believes families can be caught up in the negative energy field derived from our descendants. However, he does state, we are not pre-destined to our ancestors’ fate. Using the devise of constellations we can achieve healing. Manne’ draws on a variety of case histories from her own experience and some text book examples from Hellinger’s work. A book on the origins of family conflict is hardly light reading (at times I found it very uncomfortable). However, as a therapeutic aid the effects are challenging and profound. A fascinating introduction to Hellinger that draws emotional disquiet to the surface thus with the intention of promoting inner peace...as also recommended by the man himself. Sandra Briggs
