Deep Calm: Dr. Andrew Weil's Music for Self Healing

Deep Calm: Dr. Andrew Weil's Music for Self Healing (www.soundstrue.com, $17.98) 3/5 (for the music only) This CD is one of a series of ‘Music for Self-Healing’ with Andrew Weil MD's face and name on the sleeve aimed at inducing ‘deep calm’. The music is arranged and re-torqued by Joshua Leeds, an authority in the field of psychoacoustics which studies the effects of music and sound on the human nervous system. This is all trumpeted on the CD sleeve and liner notes which do a great job of promoting the publications of Weil and the work of Leeds

This CD is one of a series of ‘Music for Self-Healing’ with Andrew Weil MD's face and name on the sleeve aimed at inducing ‘deep calm’. The music is arranged and re-torqued by Joshua Leeds, an authority in the field of psychoacoustics which studies the effects of music and sound on the human nervous system. This is all trumpeted on the CD sleeve and liner notes which do a great job of promoting the publications of Weil and the work of Leeds. As for the music, this is a well-arranged programme of classical pieces performed by Leed's Apollo Chamber Ensemble who are the New Age equivalent of Booker T and the MG's. The music ranges from Satie's sublime Gymnopedie to Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata and is actually very well played. The order of the tracks is effective and does help induce a sense of calm and so the CD does deliver on its promise. But the endless self-promotion is tiresome although I did find amusement in the boast that pianist Lisa Spector “is the co-author of the critically acclaimed Through a Dog's Ear music series for canines”. No doubt, music for felines is in the pipeline... Ian Shirley
