Nigel Shaw has been recording and releasing music on his own Seventh Wave label for a number of years. Playing hand-carved flutes and other traditional instruments he has explored jungles of musical exotica and worldwide folk melodies. Dartmoor Symphony is undoubtedly his most ambitious work to date as he arranged music for a string orchestra to accompany him. The results are wonderful, managing to reflect the rough-hewn brutality and beauty of these famous moors into four movements of music. Maybe I'm wrong but he even appears to weave the song Hallelujah into the fabric of the Stone movement. Although Shaw plays many instruments on this CD it is his compelling flute that seduces although he leaves space in the music for the strings and the vocal contribution of his long-time collaborator Carolyn Hillyer to shine through as well. Compelling and comes with a DVD film of Dartmoor to boot. Ian Shirley
