One almost feels sorry for author Swami Kriyananda. In the first part of his book his search for truth and a meaningful way of life is so driven and heartfelt you wish he could find it sooner!

From a Romanian childhood as Donald Walters, he sets outs on his personal quest. Along the way he adopts and rejects many different values (as teenagers often do) but his search seems so much more earnest than the average adolescent. From science through to literature, every road leads him to a spiritual dead-end. Finally, at 22, his prayers are answered on reading Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramhansa Yogananda. He immediately boards a bus in New York to become one of the great Yogi’s disciples.
