The Keeper
The Keeper
Natasha Mostert
(Bantam, £6.99)
[three stars]
This is a fun novel that will appeal for a spot of light summer reading on the beach. Mia Lockhart (you have to love the name) is a keeper; a woman from a matriarchal line that protect warriors through giving remote healing before they go into battle. In her modern context, Mia protects three martial artists. However, a murderer is on the loose and appears to know how to drain chi from his victims without being present at the scene of the crime. Mia must find a way to protect her loved ones before the killer strikes again.
While not literary, this book is nevertheless well-researched and packed full of interesting facts. It also successfully merges a romantic romp with ancient esoteric Chinese treatises – and it’s not every day you find a book that does that. Tania Ahsan
