The Good Life

The recent credit crunch has meant that more people around the UK are looking to start allotments than ever before. In fact, the demand is so high that most council areas are now reporting a 10-year waiting list for a plot. One pair who were ahead of the game when it comes to growing-your-own are 34-year-old twins, Andy and Dave Hamilton from Bristol. They are the founders of the website and community, www.selfsufficientish.com and authors of the Selfsufficient-ish Bible. They ascribe their interest in self-sufficiency to their up-bringing, having been raised in a household where both parents and grandparents grew their own fruit and vegetables. Naturally, it seemed perfectly normal once the two boys were living independently for them to do the same thing. Andy says, ‘When we were growing up, our Nanna who lived across the road and looked after us, she made pickles and jams etc and our parents grew some vegetables, and it must have seeped in.’ He then adds mischievously, ‘We forgot it all as teenagers though.’
