The Way, A Celtic Qabalah, by Reverend John, O Books £11.99
It’s a pleasure to welcome to my shelves – and to recommend to yours – this excellent, rigorous, generous book. The Rev John guides us through the ancient ‘diagram of the mind’, with the clear-eyed authority of one who has walked the walk for decades before deciding to do a bit of talking. And it is more than a work of information and explanation.
The Qabalah has recently been co-modified and tarnished by celebrity advocacy and media trivialization – so this is also an act of reclamation. The subtitle, Magical Meditations for the Modern Mystic, speaks both of its function as a workbook and of the lightness to be found within. In an appendix the author speculates on what other Qabalah systems might look like – from an Astrological Qabalah via Robin Hood and the Matrix to a Lord of the Rings Qabalah – and invites us to imagine our own. The message is clear. The Qabalah is ours to explore. Preferably with an experienced guide, but not at great financial outlay nor by ceding our own responsibility. It’s a wonderfully illustrated book. Rev John brings the Qabalah to Earth, opens the door, makes connections, invites us in. He doesn’t say it isn’t difficult or challenging. He does claim it is worthwhile. It is also, for this reader, rich and fascinating. You don’t have to tie red string to your wrist or fork out for accessories, but you are invited to roll your sleeves up, get your metaphorical walking boots on and set to work.
