Bewitched by the Bay

A million backpackers pass through Australia’s Byron Bay, known simply as ‘the Bay’, every year. The first time Sarah Dawson visited Byron she was smitten by the lentil burgers, alfalfa sprouts and the crystal and healing shops. Byron fitted her like a psychedelic kid glove but now, revisiting 14 years later, would her rose-tinted bubble be burst? If you ask around any dinner table most people will have heard of Byron Bay – and doubtless have a story to tell about it. This former whaling station is dubbed Australia’s hippie headquarters or ‘alternative capital’, and it fits all shapes and sizes. Peace loving ‘happy-clappers’ arrived in 1973 for the Nimbin Aquarius Festival and they were later joined by barefoot bleached-haired ‘surfies’ attracted by the surf which rivals anything on the international circuit. Teeming in the summer months between January and March, Byron also comes to life in July to host the Writers Festival, an informal and alternative publishing event, and in August for ‘Splendour in the Grass’, a groovy music festival on a par with many of our well established UK ‘festies’.
