Pick of the Crops - www.lucypringle.co.uk

Whether one sees them as otherworldly signs, manmade works of art or an unexplained natural phenomenon, crop circles never cease to amaze and captivate people’s curiosity. Even as recently as June of this year when the ‘Pi’ crop appeared in Wiltshire it had the attention of the national press. Lucy Pringle is the custodian of the most comprehensive database on the phenomenon and we invited her to guide us through her personal experience of these amazing creations to look at some possible answers to their creation and their purpose. The crop circle is a phenomenon which bubbles underneath the surface. Despite the press doing their best over the years to ridicule the subject it’s a phenomenon that won’t go away. I have always been interested in the unexplained from a very young age. Before I could read I remember my nanny showing me a picture of beautifully coloured birds. When I asked what they were she said they were birds of paradise. I asked if they were real, she said yes. I asked, ‘In that case where’s paradise because I want to go there.' She couldn’t answer me. I was very puzzled. So I asked my governess, she also couldn’t answer me. So I summoned up the courage to ask my parents ‘where is paradise?’ Again I did not get a satisfactory answer. I was just so disillusioned, so I said, ‘Right, when I grow up I’m going to find paradise and take everybody with me and then we can see these beautiful birds.’ Then there was interest in the Loch Ness monster, after that I had awful problems with infi nity. I couldn’t come to grips with infi nity at all and it wasn’t actually until I got into the crop circle phenomenon learning so much about maths, music, chemistry, astrology, mythology, geology, physics…I realised one cannot explain infi nity – the solution to the crop circle is ineffable. Their origin is ineffability.
