Contemporary and Traditional Chinese Music – The Silk String Quartet (ARC Music)

Contemporary and Traditional Chinese Music – The Silk String Quartet (ARC Music) www.ukchinesemusic.com Members of this quartet are regular tutors at the Asian Music Circuit Summer School I attended last year, and having heard them play I just had to buy this marvellous CD! Here is traditional Chinese music played with a contemporary twist and stunning virtuosity. The pipa (4-stringed lute), guzheng (21-stringed zither), erhu (2-stringed fi ddle) and yang-qin (hammered dulcimer) complement each other perfectly, off ering a wide range of moods through some truly scintillating sound palettes. Harp-like glissandi and shimmering tremolos hover weightless as the bowed erhu glides, weaving eff ortlessly with caressing emotion, before a barrage of frenetic staccatos lead once more as if into a bright, gay, bustling Chinese marketplace. Much exuberance, innocence and humour pervade the perky rhythms that shift and fl ow like leaves caught in a young stream – then carried on as the river widens into its more timeless nature, where refl ection on deeper but still sweet waters becomes possible. If you are ever restless to hear something new, or are even just mildly curious about the sounds of this less familiar culture that is set to play an increasingly important part on the world stage, then the Silk String Quartet provide a fabulous introduction. The sheer diversity of sounds and structures, and their eff ervescent positivity and joyful energy, off er welcome refreshment to the spirit.
