Chakra Yoga
- Amanda Samson explains how hatha yoga can tone our bodies, balance our hormones and align our charkas.
Yoga postures work on the charkas, so the energy of the etheric body harmonises the physical body, emotions, mind and spirit, to evolve towards greater spiritual understanding. Certain postures squeeze the glands, pushing impurities out of the lymph. As we work with each chakra, we begin to sense where our energy is deficient of blocked and where illness and disease is more likely to manifest in our bodies. Knowing how the energies of the physical and the etheric body, work together we begin to understand our path and open to spiritual growth.
TAKE CARE: protect the body when undertaking the positions. Ideally yoga should be practised under the guidance of a qualified teacher.
Dhunurasana – the bow (or its variations, Locust, Swallow, Cat Bow)
Endocrine Gland: Adrenal glands. Chakra: Muladhara – I survive. In the Bow pose, the tight lock created in the lower back squeezes the adrenal glands. At an etheric level this works with the energies of muladhara, the root chakra, at the base of the spine. It’s colour is red. Physically: Adrenaline rush. It’s the energy that enables us to perform feats of superhuman strength or bravery, the “butterflies” or the nausea from a threat or near-miss accident. Too much adrenaline and live on constant re alert, but too little lethargy overtakes us. We start things but fail to finish them. The Spiritual Link: When this chakra is out of balance or blocked, life is simply about surviving. There is a lack of determination to develop, due to being either too stressed or too lethargic. As Muladhara represents our sense of security and satisfaction with being alive, the danger is that we become too content with our lot and seek only material pleasures, or we become unable to cope with reality. Synergy: When Muladhara and the adrenal glands are in balance and working together, we can turn the energy of survival into determination to complete a task – whether physical, emotional, mental or spiritual. The etheric energy of Muladhara helps us to evolve along our path by grounding our knowledge and intentions into the physical realm. Bringing balance: As you work with the Bow postures think of a practical situation. Focus on how you could resolve the issue if you were calmer or more motivated. Let your mind be still and allow images to come to you…
